History and Origin |
Shifu Ma Tai Eng (Singapore) first founded Ninjado in the 1970s and he was then succeeded by Grandmaster Carter Wong (Hong Kong), a well-known martial artist from the 1960s to 1970s.
Ninja-Do Singapore was brought to Singapore in 1981 by Master Tony Tan Suan Hee. In 1985, Ninja-Do was known as Ito ryu and was later split into 5 ryus (a style of art) - Kitagaryu and Kagegaryu are 2 of them. In 1987, the first Black Belt Championship Tournament was held by Ninja-Do Singapore. Ninjado was at its peak of popularity in the 1980s and 1990s where many community centres had classes for it, before its popularity dwindled due to retiring instructors and lack of international backing. It was also the time when Grandmaster Carter Wong returned to Hong Kong and Shifu Ma Tai Eng retired. In Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Kitagaryu Ninja-Do was started by Instructor Nelson in the 1980s, where Head Instructor Jin Zhou soon took over. Presently, Kitagaryu Ninja-Do in Ngee Ann Polytechnic is the last club that practices this form of martial art. |
